It’s an exciting day for Mac users, as Apple has officially rolled out macOS 15 Sequoia. Announced during the iPhone 16 “Glowtime” event, the latest macOS release is now available as a free upgrade for compatible Macs. Whether you’re eager to explore its new features or just curious about what’s changed, this blog will guide you through the highlights and key updates of Sequoia before you install it.

iPhone Mirroring: A Seamless Connection

One of the most talked-about features in macOS 15 Sequoia is iPhone Mirroring. If you’re a dedicated Apple user with both a Mac and an iPhone, this feature will change how you interact with your devices. iPhone Mirroring allows you to control your iPhone directly from your Mac, using a resizable window that mirrors your smartphone’s screen. From replying to texts to managing notifications, you can access your iPhone apps and even drag-and-drop files between your iPhone and Mac (though the latter feature is still being fine-tuned for future updates).

This feature provides a seamless integration of devices, enabling users to get the full functionality of their iPhone without ever needing to pick it up.

Safari Gets a Boost

Apple’s Safari browser has also seen improvements with macOS 15. Two standout features are Reader mode, which eliminates distractions for a clean reading experience, and Viewer mode, which automatically highlights videos on websites for easier viewing. MacBook users will appreciate the battery-saving measures that have been built into the browser, enhancing efficiency for those working on the go.

Storage and Window Management

Storage management has become more user-friendly in Sequoia. One of the most welcome changes is the ability to install apps without needing to temporarily have double the space available—a common frustration for many users. Additionally, you can now install larger apps directly onto external drives, although there are some limitations on how this works.

For those who envied the Snap Layouts feature in Windows 11, you’ll be happy to know that similar window positioning capabilities are coming to macOS 15. This new feature makes it easier to organize your desktop and improve productivity by snapping windows into predefined layouts.

New Password App and Dynamic Wallpapers

Another significant change is the introduction of a new Password app, which replaces the older Keychain system, offering a more streamlined way to manage your passwords. Alongside this, macOS 15 introduces fresh dynamic wallpapers, including a stunning forest-themed backdrop that ties into Sequoia’s branding.

Game Mode Improvements

For Mac gamers, Game Mode has received a much-needed update, providing faster frame rates and smoother performance across supported games. These under-the-hood improvements aim to enhance the gaming experience on Mac, which has historically lagged behind other platforms.

What’s Missing: Apple Intelligence

While macOS 15 is packed with new features, one major update that didn’t make the initial release is Apple Intelligence. This AI-powered functionality has been delayed and will debut in macOS 15.1, expected to arrive in October. However, Apple Intelligence will only be available on Macs with M-series chips, so older Intel-powered Macs won’t be able to take advantage of these upcoming features.

Compatibility Concerns

Not all Macs running macOS 14 Sonoma will be eligible to upgrade to Sequoia. While the system requirements haven’t changed drastically, some models will be left behind. Additionally, only Macs equipped with an Apple M-series CPU will be able to utilize the Apple Intelligence features in future updates.

macOS Sequoia is compatible with the following systems:

  • iMacs from 2019 and later
  • iMac Pro
  • Mac Studio
  • Mac Pros from 2019 and later
  • Mac Minis from 2018 and later
  • MacBook Airs from 2020 and later
  • MacBook Pros from 2018 and later

Ready to Upgrade?

macOS 15 Sequoia brings exciting new features, especially for those embedded in Apple’s ecosystem. From iPhone Mirroring to Safari upgrades and improved storage management, Sequoia offers plenty of reasons to upgrade. However, if you’re keen on AI functionality, you’ll need to wait for macOS 15.1 and ensure your Mac is equipped with an M-series processor.

Now that the new macOS is officially out, are you ready to make the leap? Be sure to check your Mac’s compatibility before diving into Sequoia’s features!
